Sustainability
Environment
Our 2030 targets are a 60 percent cut in the scope 1 and 2 emissions of our operations from 2019, 100 percent renewable electricity, 40 percent less water withdrawn in water-stressed areas, and almost nothing sent to landfill.
Emissions
Most of our own emissions come from three places: refineries and materials plants in Resources & Materials, data centers in Network Services, and the heating of large manufacturing sites in Europe and North America. We have cut emissions by 40 percent since 2019 by buying renewable electricity, electrifying process heat at four refineries and moving data center cooling to outside air wherever the climate allows.
Launches and operations in orbit are reported separately and are not included in our scope 1 and 2 totals, in line with current reporting guidance. They accounted for an estimated 84 kilotonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2025.
Electricity
In 2025, 68 percent of the electricity we used came from renewable sources, through long-term power purchase agreements in nine countries, on-site solar at 44 sites, and certificates where neither is available. Toronto North runs on hydroelectric and nuclear power from the Ontario grid and wind under contract.
Water
Our largest water use is at mines and refineries. Eleven of our sites are in areas of high water stress, mostly in Western Australia and Chile, where we have cut withdrawal by 29 percent since 2019 by recycling process water.
Helping customers
We estimate that products we sold in 2025 will avoid about 9.1 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over their lifetimes compared with the alternatives customers would otherwise have bought: ML-7 lasers in place of mechanical cutting, outside-air cooling in hosted data centers, and HG-series groves in place of field production and long-distance transport.
