TriOptimum Agrisystems today opened its largest vertical farm, a 24,000 square-meter building on the edge of Almere that will grow 3,100 tonnes of salad leaves, herbs and soft fruit a year for supermarkets across the Netherlands.

The farm is built from 1,640 HG-40 grove modules on eight floors, under lighting and climate systems controlled by Agrisystems’ ClimaCore software. It uses about 94 percent less water per kilogram than field production, needs no pesticides and runs on electricity from a wind farm in the Markermeer under a fifteen-year contract.

The farm will employ 118 people when fully operational in the spring. Agrisystems will operate it for its retail customers under a twelve-year agreement.

The modules growing lettuce in Almere were designed to feed a crew in orbit. It turns out that if you can grow food there, you can grow it anywhere.
